Anwar sworn in as MP

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim ended his 10-year absence from Parliament after being sworn in at 10.05am.

The "de facto" prefix will now be dropped as he takes his place as opposition leader in the House. Pakatan Rakyat representatives already informed Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia of their endorsement of his leadership.

The controversial DNA Identification Bill will be the first debate for him to take aim at and tomorrow he will take his place opposite the man he seeks to depose, Finance and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, during the tabling of the 2009 Budget.

Anwar said at a press conference after the swearing-in that Pakatan Rakyat is on track to form the government.

He also described his win in Permatang Pauh as "gratifying" because despite the billions of ringgit and powerful election machinery, BN could not dictate the minds of Malaysians.
